Liz Wildes, Boundless Learning

Introduce yourself in three words or phrases.

Strategic, innovative, and disciplined.

What do you like most about your job?

Boundless Learning is an exciting workplace. We empower people to change the world through learning, and I have the opportunity to work with academic partners all over the world. While we operate under a new name [the company was previously known as Pearson Online Learning Services], we are not new to this industry and are pioneers in providing online learning solutions.

We will continue supporting higher education institutions as we have done for over 30 years. I’m excited about continuing to work with our academic partners and look forward to partnering with organisations worldwide to help them meet their unique goals.

    Best work trip/Worst work trip?

Best: In 2013, I visited four universities in Hawaii. While there, I drove a key initiative for my current company and helped make impactful changes regarding learning and affordability for students. Plus, the location was fantastic!

Worst: This one started great, but it ended with a challenge. I was at my annual sales meeting in Idaho; it was a great and inspiring week. I was supposed to fly out on Friday morning to go home, and a significant snowstorm came through the area. My flight was canceled, and the airline told me the earliest they could rebook me was on Sunday. I rented a car, drove five hours in a storm to a different airport with more options, and found another flight to get me home. It took more than 36 hours to get home.

If you could learn a language instantly, which would you pick and why?

Spanish. Since I live in the US, it would be helpful for me to speak and understand this language fluently. I may need to start with a language app!

What makes you get up in the morning?

For over 20 years, I have had the privilege of building a career that impacts learning and education. It is important to me to do something that helps change the trajectory of students’ lives. It has been an honour to represent four different companies while fulfilling this personal mission.

Champion/cheerleader which we should all follow and why?

One of my favourites is Sam Jacobs, the CEO and founder of Pavilion. This professional organisation, which I belong to, works with GTM, sales, and marketing executives worldwide. I have completed many professional development courses and programs through Pavilion, including CRO and CMO schools. Sam posts many great tips on making your business more successful that can be applied to any industry.

Best international ed conference and why

The ASU/GSV Summit in San Diego features a diverse audience representing over 100 countries and provides unparalleled networking opportunities. The event includes edtech executives, startup founders, and representatives from educational institutions worldwide.

The event consists of visionary speakers who discuss the most pressing challenges and innovations in education technology, AI, and equity in education.

    Worst conference food/beverage experience

There isn’t one that stands out, but any time I see a pasta buffet bar for lunch, I know it will make for a sluggish afternoon. People tend to overeat and often need a nap after a meal like that!

Book or podcast recommendation for others in the sector?

    The Higher Ed Pulse podcast

Describe a project or initiative you’re currently working on that excites you.

I am helping to develop Boundless Learning’s future growth plans by outlining our strengths, identifying areas for improvement, and determining how to support our partners better. This is an exciting project because it takes our 30 years of experience and ensures that we stay current and identify how to provide the most effective solutions for our current and future partners.
