GEMS Education set to open $100m school in Dubai

The purpose-built English curriculum school will be located in Sports City, Dubai, and will boast an olympic-size swimming pool and a football pitch that doubles as a helipad.

Fees at the new school will range from AED116,000 (USD 31,500) to AED206,000 (USD 56,000).

“We believe in empowering the next generation to shape a better world. GEMS School of Research and Innovation is a testament to our unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional education based on our 65 years of experience,” said Sunny Varkey, chairman and founder of GEMS Education and The Varkey Foundation.

“By combining the very best hand-picked educators recruited from the UK and around the world with cutting-edge technology and unmatched facilities, we are creating a unique school where every student has the opportunity to thrive and innovate, leveraging their own innate curiosity.”

According to a release from GEMS Education, “every element of the school has been meticulously crafted to provide an enhanced sensory experience”, and includes dedicated reading and play spaces to state-of-the-art STEM and disruption labs.

Pupils will benefit from specialist robotics and science laboratories, as well as AR and VR-enabled learning centres.

“This is more than a school – it is a transformative space where education meets innovation,” said Lisa Crausby OBE, chief education officer of GEMS Education.

“At GEMS School of Research and Innovation, students will benefit from personalised learning experiences, driven by exceptional teachers and enhanced by world-class facilities. We are preparing our students not just for the challenges of today, but for the opportunities of tomorrow.”

The enhanced British curriculum is designed to blend academic excellence with future-focused subjects, said the school, allowing students to engage with subjects such as computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, esports, and game design from an early age while exploring specialist languages, arts, sports, engineering, and business.

The school’s extended day program offers a diverse co-curriculum designed to support students’ development in areas such as gymnastics, swimming, musical theatre, classical dance, and street performance.

Elsewhere, the school said that partnerships with industry leaders like Microsoft, HP, and Apple are set to provide “real-world learning opportunities that foster entrepreneurial mindsets and encourage students to turn ideas into impactful solutions”.

GEMS Education’s international education footprint extends to 52 schools across the United Arab Emirates.

The news comes as the Dubai education market continues to grow, with international K-12 and higher education providers flocking to the city. New openings across Dubai are expected to add more than 16,000 new places to the private school sector at various fee points.

Dubai currently has 220 private schools, 274 early childhood centres and 38 higher education institutions. All three sectors saw record enrolment growth during the last academic year, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.
