India and South Korea partner on vocational education initiative

The initiative is designed to establish a robust framework for vocational education and training in the discipline, aligning with the needs of a rapidly evolving job market.

Last week, the Korean International Cooperation Agency facilitated the first-ever bilateral note exchange between the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and India’s Ministry of Finance.

The agreement was formally signed by Lee Seong-ho, the Korean ambassador to India, and Manisha Sinha, additional secretary, Ministry of Finance.

This marks KOICA’s debut project in India since Korea was designated India’s official development assistance partner for development cooperation in October 2016.

KOICA, established by South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support development in emerging economies, aims to bring its expertise to the forefront through this partnership.

“KOICA has introduced several programs to educate and upskill the youth, preparing them to meet the evolving demands of Industry 4.0,” said Seong-ho.

“One of our flagship initiatives is the TVET Mechatronics Project, developed in partnership with NCERT. This program equips students with advanced technical skills, ensuring they are ready to thrive in a dynamic and competitive global environment.”

The two-year project will be implemented by India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training at the Regional Institute of Education in Bhopal.

It will focus on building an environment conducive to mechatronics education by designing modern curricula, developing textbooks, creating teacher manuals, and equipping training centers with cutting-edge tools and technologies.

Beyond infrastructure, the project will emphasise capacity-building programs for educators, enabling them to deliver high-quality, industry-relevant training.

Moreover, the program aims to strengthen ties between academia and industry, fostering collaboration between RIE, Bhopal, and leading industrial players.

This partnership will help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing students for real-world challenges in the field of mechatronics.

This marks the beginning of a deeper collaboration between our two nations

At the signing ceremony, Seong-ho highlighted the broader vision of the collaboration.

“This marks the beginning of a deeper collaboration between our two nations. As the project progresses, we look forward to the active engagement of more stakeholders in this journey of shared development,” stated the ambassador.

Over the years, several countries have worked with India in the field of vocational education.

Last year, a high-level dialogue was held between India and Australia aimed at expanding partnerships to deliver Australia’s high-quality education in India and address skills gaps through education and vocational training programs.
