London Higher unveils interactive map highlighting city’s R&D reach

The interactive map, which was unveiled on December 9, features over 70 examples where London university research and development projects are “directly impacting” communities around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Users can organise research impact case studies by regions, giving an insight into “place-oriented initiatives”, London Higher said in a release.

The “capital gains map” also puts a spotlight on collaborations between London universities and other institutions around the UK, given that many of the research projects had been carried out with other university partners.

And there are plans to expand the project, using the map as a “live resource” that grows as more research projects – which are categorised under one of four themes: arts and humanities; medicine, health and life sciences; physical sciences, engineering and mathematics; and social sciences – are added, London Higher said.

When it comes to investing in projects that make a difference to communities across the regions, it’s time to stop looking only at where the money goes, but to where the output flows

It builds on London Higher’s previously released civic map, which launched in 2021 and has grown over time to document examples of university-led civic activity in London.

“Research performed by London’s universities is bringing benefits right across the nation. When it comes to investing in projects that make a difference to communities across the regions, it’s time to stop looking only at where the money goes, but to where the output flows,” said London Higher CEO, Dr Diana Beech.

“Our Capital Gains map shows why every pound invested in London’s universities is also an investment in better societal, economic and health outcomes in constituencies up and down the UK.”
