MasterCAS launches new university rankings

Student recruitment marketplace platform MasterCAS (formerly known as Libereka) has launched the STAGE (Strategic Trends in Academic Global Excellence) world university rankings in what it is calling a “bold, data-informed reimagining” of how institutional quality and global impact have been reimagined.

The rankings have been developed to include “rigorous, multi-metric framework”, a statement from MasterCAS explained – with the University of Oxford leading the pack. The team behind the project say their rankings go “beyond legacy measures to include the real-world conditions that shape higher education outcomes”.

Speaking to The PIE News, Soumik Ganguly, founder of CEO of MasterCAS commented: “The global higher education landscape is changing rapidly, shaped not only by academic performance but also by geopolitical dynamics, migration policy, social equity, and long-term career viability.

“Yet most existing university rankings still rely heavily on legacy indicators, often placing academic reputation and research citations above real student experiences or global realities,” he said.

“The STAGE Rankings were created to reflect this shift. We believe students and institutions deserve a ranking that evaluates universities on the full scope of what success means today, not just in classrooms and laboratories but also in graduate employment, post-study opportunities, safety, and global mobility.”

According to Ganguly, STAGE incorporates aspects of geopolitical context – visa regimes, academic freedom and employment prospects.

It also includes “forward-looking metrics” like safety and bias, and access & equity, which Ganguly said are increasingly central to how students choose where, and how, to study.

“In short, STAGE offers a more holistic, student-centred, and globally attuned perspective – one that complements, rather than competes with, traditional rankings by addressing what they overlook,” he said.

STAGE groups its indicators into five core parameters, each capturing “critical dimensions of university excellence and impact”. These include:

  • Student outcomes (25%), which evaluates how well universities prepare students for meaningful careers through assessing employer reputation
  • Teaching quality (25%), which includes aspects such as academic citations and research quality
  • Access and equity (15%), which includes inclusivity and political influence
  • Global impact (20%), which includes aspects such as international collaborations and contributions to global research
  • Safety and bias (20%), which includes aspects such as academic freedom and cultural openness.

Looking ahead, Ganguly envisions STAGE as a “continuously evolving framework” updated annually to reflect new realities including including labour market shifts, regional developments, and emerging challenges like digital access or climate impact.

“We also see potential for regional editions, subject-specific rankings, and interactive decision tools tailored to student goals,” he said.

In the new rankings, the University of Oxford comes out on top, followed by the University of Cambridge and and Harvard University.

The following universities complete the top 10: Stanford University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of California Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Tokyo and the University of Pennsylvania.
